Dental Implants

Dental implants are the best way to replace missing teeth. Research has shown that implants attain the highest success rates of any dental treatment. They look, feel and function like your natural teeth. Dental implants can complete your smile, improve bite or chewing ability, maintain comfort, and promote dental health. Here at River Valley Dental we have over 24 years of experience and advanced training in restoring missing teeth with implants.

dental implant diagramA dental implant is a small, titanium screw that becomes the replacement root for the missing natural tooth. The screw is surgically implanted into the upper or lower jaw where the bone fuses with it and it becomes an anchor or foundation to which the dentist can then secure a post. Any number of restorations can be attached to this post.

Implants can:

  • replace a single missing tooth
  • replace multiple missing teeth
  • support a bridge, partial dentures, or even full dentures

Why should you consider dental implants?

Appearance: Without the structure that a natural tooth provides the bone in that area can shrink, making your face look older than it is. Implants fill out your face and can make you look years younger and healthier.

Function: Implants allow you to chew normally and enjoy all the foods you love. They are strong and as attractive as natural teeth. Dental implants eliminate the need for adhesives to hold dentures in place.

Preservation of healthy teeth: Dentists often have to modify adjacent healthy teeth in order to create anchors for traditional partials and bridges. Extensive tooth preparation is avoided with implant dentistry.

Durability: Implants are stable, comfortable, and can last your lifetime.

How long is the implant process?

dental implantFrom start to finish the implant process can take several months to complete. It typically involves a three-stage process.

Stage 1: The implant is surgically placed in the bone and covered with some of the surrounding gum tissue. Then there is a waiting period while the bone fuses to the implant. This normally takes 3-6 months.

Stage 2: The implant is exposed and a healing cap/post is placed. The gum tissue is allowed to heal around the cap/post for two or three weeks.

Stage 3: An impression is taken using an impression post that is used for recording the location of the implant. Digital photographs are taken to communicate better with the artisans who will create your restoration. In designing crowns the doctors pay particular attention to tooth color, size, and shape, as well as to the contours and shape of your gum tissue, in order to give you the most natural looking teeth and the best possible smile. After two weeks Dr. Tri or Dr. Hulse places your custom made restoration on the post.
