Treatment for Bad Breath

Halitosis or bad breath is a term used to describe noticeably unpleasant odors exhaled in breathing. Halitosis is estimated to be the third most frequent reason for seeking dental care, following tooth decay and periodontal disease. Left untreated it can cause embarrassment and can affect interpersonal relationships.

The consumption of certain foods such as garlic, onions, and even coffee can affect our breath. This occurs because these foods are absorbed into our bloodstream, where they are transferred into our lungs and exhaled. Fortunately, bad breath caused by foods is temporary.

Most breath odor comes from food particles trapped in our mouths or from lack of good oral hygiene habits. When food remains in our mouths it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria that can cause bad breath, tooth decay, and periodontal (gum disease). Smoking and the use of tobacco products along with poor oral health, improper cleaning of the teeth and gums, and even improper cleaning of dentures can all lead to bad breath. Bad breath can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition of the stomach, lungs and bloodstream.

Another factor that can contribute to halitosis is xerostomia (dry mouth). When the mouth is dry, saliva production decreases, leaving the mouth’s natural ability to clean itself impaired. Saliva is the mouth’s natural mouthwash to help reduce bacteria in the mouth. Alcohol consumption, certain medications, breathing through the mouth instead of the nose can contribute to having a dry mouth. This is another reason why it is important to inform our team at River Valley Dental of all medications you may be taking.

At River Valley Dental we know how important it is to get halitosis under control. We can help by providing proper dental hygiene instruction and cleaning techniques. This will help to minimize the formation of bacteria in your mouth and fend off bad breath. We can also make other recommendations to assist with preventing this condition. If you are in need of periodontal (gum disease treatment) we will educate you about this condition and get you on the road to proper treatment and back to health. If you have concerns about this condition, be sure to ask one of our team members at your appointment or call our office.
